“Curiosity is a delicate little plant which, aside from stimulation, stands mainly in need of freedom.” ~ Albert Einstein
I could say that something as cliche as, “there’s no time like the present”, or that I’ve had some amazing revolutionary transformation that has made me impervious to fear. I’m guessing by now, you’ve figured out that I’d be lying. So, why does it feel that now is the right time? What makes this time different? It’s different because a seed was planted within me years ago, and as Einstein says, it’s now in need of freedom.
A little over a year ago, I was at my friend Leigh Humphries Orr’s house for a girl’s weekend. There’s something pretty amazing about being with college friends that have seen you through most of the stages of life ~ a unique mixture of the days of your youth combined with a splash of the women you are today. You probably can identify with what I mean…you giggle like school girls yet can simultaneously discuss real life issues affecting you today. These are also the times that are best to “strike while the iron is hot” on some long over due tough love.
The other girls had gone to bed when Leigh and I began our discussion about me taking the bull by the horns ~ it’s time get moving on creating a business plan. At the very least , she strongly suggested I get involved with a company that combines fashion and image. I have a great deal of respect for her opinion both personally and professionally. She has successfully owned one business, and is currently the co-owner of an amazing boutique called Joie de Vivre in Morehead City, NC. She knows first hand how incredible it is to work doing something that you are so completely passionate about.
Leigh should absolutely be a motivational speaker in her next life. Her enthusiasm is infectious and she has the innate ability of forcing you to look inside and act on whatever needs to be changed in your life. She does this with some serious straight talk and a great deal of compassion ~ almost demanding you to recognize that it is your responsibility to take charge of your own destiny. She made me believe that I was fully capable of running my own business and that it’s time to stop making excuses.
I left that weekend knowing in my heart and mind that now was the time. NOW, of course, is over a year later but the feeling I had walking out her door never left. I suppose I actually did begin laying the ground work right away. I began working on some personal housekeeping that had be completed before I could fully focus on any new (ad)venture. Now that the housekeeping is out of the way, I now have the freedom to focus.
Before I close yet another novella, I must specifically acknowledge my best friend, Ashley Moore. Ashley has been there for the entire journey and as never allowed me to give up on anything over the years. She has played the role of counselor, guinea pig (more on that later), and life loyal friend. She is one of my number one, and tirelessly dedicated, cheerleaders on a team consisting of my husband, parents, and so many others. I’m so incredibly blessed to have her as a sister friend.
By the way, if you haven’t been to Leigh’s shop ~ you MUST. Here’s a link to the Facebook page for Joie de Vivre. A very special thank you goes out to her for all of her encouragement and for allowing me to share.
