If you are a friend or follow me on Facebook or Instagram, it’s no real secret that love accessories! Lots and LOTS of accessories. Baubles and bangles that sparkle and shine. They are the cherry on top of any look and, more importantly, an inexpensive way to change your look without breaking the bank!
A girlfriend contacted me and asked how I organized them because she’s seen so many different pieces? So here goes…
Let me begin by saying that I do NOT believe that anything should be saved for “best” – sure there are special pieces or fragile ones that should be worn less often, but they were all designed to be worn! Don’t deprive yourself.
I also know that when you don’t see them, you don’t wear them. This really goes for anything you own – shoes, handbags, clothes, cosmetics and so forth. (If you are overwhelmed by your things and need help with that…I happen to know a girl who’s a pro at cleaning out your closets. I know, shameless plug!)
The easy solution was to incorporate them into my decor, I see them daily and it makes it far easier to “shop” my jewelry. It also makes putting them away very easy so that they aren’t all balled up in a corner or thrown into a small box to never be seen again. Most importantly, they make me happy. I remember who I was with when I bought them, or who gave them to me and they truly are what I call wearable art. Even that
cheap thrifty find is hanging there because I loved it – I wouldn’t have bought it otherwise.
I do recognize that not everyone has an entire room dedicated as their dressing room. I’m a stylist so this “playroom” as I call it also doubles as my office and is totally how I justified it to my husband. If you don’t have much room or only a few accessories, just pick a small wall near your clothes. Even inside your closet. I do, however, suggest that it is near a full length mirror so that you see the full effect and to ensure that the pairing is really how you imagined and not something that needs to be tweaked at all.
Here are some other things to consider when displaying your jewelry. Inexpensive jewelry and silver oxidize VERY quickly. I am careful to make sure that the items that are likely to change color fast are not touching metal, but are touching wood or plastic. I’m not a scientist, so I only know from personal experience that if I hang them from a metal hook, they turn more quickly. Keep a polishing cloth handy for quick clean up and remember to dust them.
Finally, these are some other ways that I’ve incorporated my most used items into my decor. It’s a hodge podge that makes no sense to anyone but me. I’m okay with that because it’s my happy place and it all makes sense to me.
Some of my favorite reading next to one of my favorite things – a handbag made from Japanese obi!
This probably won’t come as a surprise, but I’m a makeup junkie, too!
Having my scents displayed makes them easy for a quick spritz on my way out the door.
Hope that helps…I’d love to know how you decide to store your favorite finds. Also, if there’s something that you’d like to know more about, please let me know!
